Vision
The Junior Music School is a fun and creative environment in which young musicians can develop their instrumental skills and learn about music with others of similar ability. It aims to support teachers in some of the wider aspects of music making that they often wish they had more time to cover in the lesson. It also acts as an ideal first stage before students have the opportunity to 'graduate' into the Sheffield Music School.

Curriculum
With an enthusiastic staff team to guide students through the morning, each Saturday combines learning about music, developing key musical skills, and, of course, lots of group playing, all done using interactive and fun methods that will both inspire and enthuse all budding young musicians.

The Morning is divided
into two halfs:

9.00 - 9.45 General Musicianship.

Includes aural training, guides to listening to music, singing, composing, improvising, and lots more

9.45 - 9.55 Break

9.55 - 10.45 Performance class
Students divide into smaller ensembles, including string groups, wind groups, and combined ensembles. At the end of each term, students get to show off the fruits of their work in the Sheffield Music School's concerts.

In addition to the above, students benefit from extra events such as masterclasses and workshops from visiting top musicians, including collaborations with Music in the Round and their highly regarded concert series at the Crucible.

Who for?
The Junior Music School is for young string, wind and brass players of approximately Grades 3-5 standard. It is an excellent way to learn more about music and have fun playing with others who share your enthusiasm. Once students reach Grade 5 standard they will be eligible to apply to the Sheffield Music School.
